August 2024 - One at a time

You have probably heard many times recently how multi-tasking is the biggest lie we were ever sold... well that also applies to how we think about decluttering!

We just simply cannot do more than one thing at the same time and hope to get the same, or better results. But the way we tend to think about shifting clutter is in one big go and so if we don't have a long time period, a spare warehouse and some willing helpers on call then we tend to give up before we have started.

Speaking to clients this week it is clear that the idea of clutter snowballs in our minds into on big mess with all the assorted thoughts and feelings that go with it and it becomes this massive topic which can be overwhelming or at the very least too big to tackle.

If you think about your clutter as unmade decisions then it could start to become clearer as to why it needs to be tackled on a in individual item basis. How can you make 1000 decisions at once - your brain just won't compute!

So next time you are boiling a kettle, waiting through an ad break, sitting in the car (not driving of course!) or even have made it early to a meeting, use those tiny pockets of time to make some decisions, or set the ball in motion in your mind abut what decisions you want to make. Perhaps it's clearing emails out, taking one item from a cupboard, finding a finished-with magazine... whatever you see hanging around or out of place - make that decision!
