September 2024 - Emotional Resistance

We spoke a lot through the summer, in my Facebook group, about procrastination and how getting over the hurdle of doing the first tiniest bit of a task can be the hardest bit.

We weren't all sure what was getting in the way, or why we felt this resistance- many things came up such as fear, boredom, resistance to "demands", not knowing where to start and interestingly not knowing what "finished" looked like.

Believe it or not, our brains are negatively wired and will always try to see the danger, a reason not to do something, or create some anxiety when it wants to protect us. It is also wired, and can be exacerbated, to fear letting go or a lack of something. That is why any task that is related to decluttering, throwing things away or downsizing can be accompanied by fear, anxiety or a general resistance. It is not usually nature's way to encourage us to have less!

So what can we do about it? Switching up our mindset to "get over" the hump can involve different tactics depending on your underlying issue. The techniques can range from getting clearer in your mind on what you are aiming for and reminding yourself that this is safe, positive and an exciting thing to work towards, to taking control and making the decision for yourself regardless of what others are saying, to being able to break the tasks down into minute steps that seem achievable.

Why not grab the flow chart and have a look yourself to see where your resistance is coming from. Click here to request.
