Why does it take someone else being present to make me do something?
Have you experienced this common phenomenon where you seem to only make progress when you have someone else with you? Not necessarily doing the thing with you, but simply there.
It is known as body doubling, and it is not about pressure or shame, but somehow allows us to hone in on what we need to do and get it done.
I join a weekly call where we state our intentions and then work in silence for 45 minutes on our own specific work, but all remain present on the call.
It is weirdly effective, and for me, it is more than the accountability about having to share at the end what we did (but that is part of it 😆), it is also about providing a space to focus and be calm and concentrate. Research also shows that there is a dopamine effect of being with others and sharing intentions.
So perhaps the question is less about "why" does it work and more about how are you going to tap into that knowledge that you have about yourself.
What do you need to get done today, tomorrow, this week and how could you use this information to get it done?
P.S. if you are interested about the weekly call - just ask for the details.
